Why are our Mid Wales local planning authorities continuing to prop up the league tables of performing authorities in Wales when it comes to dealing with planning applications? Powys occupied 21st position during the last performance quarter while Ceredigion werein last position at 25th! By contrast, Pembrokeshire topped the league with 85% of applications being dealt with within 8 weeks (the standard performance criteria). But Pembrokeshire received a greater throughput of planning applications than both their Mid Wales cousins.
We now see that Powys Council's Audit Committee has initiated a review of Powys Planning Services. Fine, but we also see that the review is to be undertaken by its own councillors! It is only some 18 months when the Brecon Beacons National Park called in external reviewers to look at their service. Although uncomfortable at the time, the National Park Authority has since made dramatic improvements and its last performance figures revealed the Park planners are now in 8th position in the league tables and are undertaking part of the Powys planning applications service on an agency basis. Only time then before they take over the entire service of both Ceredigion and Powys!
